Substantial ruinsruined, but plenty survives above ground
Canons Ashby has belonged to the Dryden family since 1551, among them the poet John Dryden, the first official Poet Laureate. The Elizabethan manor sits in formal gardens that Edward Dryden laid out in four descending terraces around 1710, with topiary and old lead statuary. The Drydens gave the house and its estate to the National Trust in 1981. It lies a few miles from Sulgrave, and opens through the main season.
