Althorp has been the Spencers’ seat since 1508 and is best known now as the childhood home of Diana, Princess of Wales, who is buried on the island in the lake called the Round Oval. The island itself is closed to visitors; a summerhouse on the bank serves as her memorial. The house opens only in July and August, set in some 550 acres of park near Great Brington. Long Buckby station is about 6km to the west.
