St Matthew’s is a big late-Victorian Gothic church, built in the early 1890s in memory of the brewer and MP Pickering Phipps. Its fame came later: in the 1940s the vicar Walter Hussey commissioned Henry Moore’s stone Madonna and Child and Graham Sutherland’s Crucifixion, two landmark works of modern religious art that face each other across the transepts. Open to visitors.
