A brook runs between the two halves of Barnwell, past limestone cottages a couple of miles south of Oundle. The ruined 13th-century castle stands in private grounds on the manor estate — you can see its twin-towered gatehouse from the road but not go in. Barnwell Country Park spreads along the Nene just to the north, with lakes and easy walking that make the better reason to stop.
