Elton Hall has been the Proby family’s home near Peterborough since the 17th century, a part-Gothic, part-Tudor house with restored formal gardens around it. The grounds hold long herbaceous borders, a rose garden and a Gothic orangery. Open on limited days in summer with an admission charge, so check the calendar before setting out. Peterborough station is about 12km north-east.
