Longthorpe Tower
Local highlightOne of the most complete sets of 14th-century domestic wall paintings in northern Europe covers a single first-floor room here, on the edge of Peterborough. Painted around 1330 for the Thorpe family, they show the Wheel of Life, the Nativity and a cast of birds and saints, rediscovered under limewash in 1945. English Heritage opens the tower on limited days. Peterborough station is about 3km east.
