John Dryden spent the last two summers of his life at Cotterstock Hall, writing his Fables in an upstairs room still called Dryden’s Room, on visits to his cousin Elizabeth Steward. The village is a handful of 17th-century stone houses above the Nene near Oundle, with St Andrew’s — a Norman church enlarged in the 1330s for a small medieval college. Dryden was born up the valley at Aldwincle.
