Slapton Ley is the largest natural freshwater lake in the South West, held back from the sea by nothing more than a shingle bar that carries the coast road. It’s a national nature reserve of reedbed and open water, good for wildfowl, warblers and the odd rarity, with trails and hides around the shore. The village of Slapton sits just inland. Totnes station is about 17km north.
