Colourful naval town on the Dart.
Dartmouth stacks up the wooded bank of the Dart estuary, a historic port with a Tudor waterfront and the Britannia Royal Naval College above it, completed in 1905. Downstream at the river mouth, Dartmouth Castle’s gun tower of the 1480s was among the first forts in Britain built for artillery. Boats run up the tidal river to Dittisham. Paignton is the nearest station, about 9km north.
