Rupert D’Oyly Carte, of the Savoy and the Gilbert and Sullivan operas, built Coleton Fishacre in the 1920s — an Arts and Crafts house with Jazz Age interiors, set into a steep coastal combe near Kingswear. The garden is the real pleasure: a lush, part-subtropical valley of tender planting that funnels down to a viewpoint over the sea. National Trust; paid entry.
