Caerlaverock is a National Nature Reserve in Dumfries and Galloway, covering 82 km². It is the only National Nature Reserve in the county. It lies inside the Nith Estuary National Scenic Area.

For arrivals by rail, Annan Station is about 6 km to the east. Upper Solway Flats & Marshes and WWT Caerlaverock are among the nature reserves within 1.2 km.
