Southerness is a Solway resort village strung behind a wide tidal beach, marked by its whitewashed lighthouse of 1749 — one of the oldest in Scotland, disused now but still standing over the sands. The beach runs out a long way at low tide, so keep an eye on the returning water. There’s a well-known golf links here too.
