New Abbey grew up beneath Sweetheart Abbey, the red-sandstone ruin that Dervorgilla of Galloway founded in 1273 in memory of her husband — she kept his embalmed heart by her and named the abbey “Dulce Cor”, sweet heart, for it. The roofless church is cared for by Historic Environment Scotland. The village also has a working 18th-century corn mill, and sits below the slopes of Criffel.
