Robert Burns spent his last years in Dumfries and died here in 1796; you can visit his house and, at St Michael’s, the domed mausoleum where he’s buried. The “Queen of the South” is the region’s main town, red-sandstone and set on the River Nith with its old arched bridge. It’s the local hub — trains, shops and the jumping-off point for the Galloway coast.
