Places to explore in Dumfries and GallowayScotland · Southern Scotland

The Southern Uplands roll across this quiet south-western corner, rising to the granite Galloway Hills — Merrick is the highest — and falling to the tidal flats of the Solway. Forest and empty moor make the Galloway Dark Sky Park one of the darkest places in Britain, and Robert the Bruce fought his way back to power in the hills above Loch Trool. The moated Caerlaverock Castle sits on the shore, Sweetheart Abbey keeps its red-stone ruin inland, and the cliffs run out to the Mull of Galloway, Scotland's southernmost point.
