The Crown Hotel sits right on the harbour at Portpatrick, the painted cliff-village where the Southern Upland Way begins its 214-mile crossing east to Cockburnspath. It’s a seafood inn first and foremost, so walkers setting off (or staggering in at the finish) tend to pile in for local fish and a pint by the water. Stranraer station is about 10km to the north-east.
