What you come for sits in a glass-fronted porch at the west end — eight carved stones, three from the 500s AD and among the oldest Christian memorials in Britain, two of those naming bishops. They mark a church site second only to Whithorn in this corner of Scotland. The building itself is Victorian, a burial chapel of 1889 put up by Lady McTaggart Stewart of Ardwell, and it is kept locked; the medieval kirk has gone. Free, open all year. Park in the pull-off and walk the track to the churchyard gate — bright sun turns the glass into a mirror.
