If you’re setting out on the Southern Upland Way, Portpatrick is where it begins — coast to coast to Cockburnspath, from this painted harbour on the Rhins. It was once the packet port for Ireland, the short crossing to Donaghadee. These days it’s a cheerful place with a curved harbour, cliff walks north and south, and pubs facing the water.
