Gatehouse of Fleet is a tidy grid-plan town in the wooded Fleet valley, built up around cotton mills in the late 1700s — busy enough for a while to earn the nickname “the Glasgow of the South.” The mills have gone, but the planned streets, a clock tower and the Mill on the Fleet visitor centre remain. Cardoness Castle stands just outside the town.
