The gardens wrap around the great pink-sandstone castle at Drumlanrig in Nithsdale, the Dumfriesshire seat of the Duke of Buccleuch. There’s a Victorian parterre, a rock and bog garden and long woodland walks, home to more than 500 kinds of rhododendron and azalea and the largest weeping beech in Scotland. The gardens open daily from March to October. Come in May for the Himalayan blue poppies; Sanquhar station is about 13km away.
