Moniaive is a cluster of painted cottages where three glens meet in the hills above Dumfries, with a 17th-century mercat cross at its centre. It’s long had an arty, independent streak — galleries and a summer festival — and makes a quiet base for walking the Glencairn hills. A lovely off-the-beaten-track stop well inland from the coast.
