Wanlockhead is the highest village in Scotland, sitting above 400 m in the Lowther Hills — a former lead-mining settlement where you can tour the Museum of Lead Mining and head down a restored mine. Gold of remarkable purity was found in these hills too, enough to end up in the Scottish crown. The Southern Upland Way runs straight through; bring layers, as it’s high and exposed whatever the season.
