Sanquhar’s post office has been trading since 1712, which makes it — by most reckonings — the oldest working post office in the world, its nearest rival in Stockholm opening a full eight years later. This upper Nithsdale royal burgh also gives its name to the two-colour Sanquhar knitting pattern, and it was here in 1680 that the Covenanters nailed up their defiant Declaration. The station is a short way out of town.
