Up at Wanlockhead, Scotland’s highest village, this open-air museum tells the story of the lead miners who worked these hills. You can go underground on a guided tour of a real mine, look round the restored miners’ cottages, and see the old subscription library the workers built for themselves. It opens seasonally with an admission charge — a genuinely interesting stop high in the Lowther Hills.
