Pull into the layby on the A747 above Luce Bay and the chapel is in the field opposite — foundations, really. A rectangle roughly 7m by 4m sits inside a low stone-walled enclosure, with an old well set into the ground beside the wall. It went up around the 900s or 1000s, probably as a shelter for pilgrims landing from Ireland and walking on to St Ninian’s shrine at Whithorn, and takes its name from St Finnian, said to have taught Columba. Nothing stands above knee height. Free, open all year.
