Founded in 1817 on the banks of the Bladnoch near Wigtown, this is one of Scotland’s oldest working distilleries and about as far south as Scotch gets made. It bills itself as the oldest independently owned Scotch whisky distillery. There’s a visitor centre and tours run by booking, so check ahead rather than just turning up. It’s a fair way from any railway — Barrhill is the nearest, over 30km off.
