Garlieston is a neat crescent of a village around a sheltered Machars bay, and it played a quiet part in D-Day — the prototype Mulberry harbours were tested in these waters, where the wide tidal range stood in for the Normandy coast. Concrete remnants still lie on the shore. It’s an out-of-the-way place with gentle bay walks.
