Walk past the harbour at Isle of Whithorn and the path brings you out on the headland at St Ninian’s Chapel — four roofless walls standing close to full height, rebuilt around 1300 on the site of an earlier one. Pilgrims coming ashore by boat gave thanks here before walking the last few miles inland to the shrine at Whithorn Priory. A 19th-century sea captain carted off the facing stone for his house, and what you see owes a lot to repairs made in 1898. No roof and no services now. Free, open all year; the Witness Cairn is on the way up.
