The UK’s first Dark Sky Park, a huge stretch of forest and hill where the lack of light pollution makes for genuinely star-filled skies. On a clear, moonless night you can pick out the Milky Way with the naked eye. It’s open forest all round — the visitor centres at Clatteringshaws and Kirroughtree are good bases — but wrap up warm and bring a torch for the walk back.
