A granite obelisk of 1835 standing on a hill above Talnotry, in the Galloway Forest. It honours Alexander Murray, a shepherd’s son from these hills who taught himself languages and rose to become a professor at Edinburgh. A steep path climbs to it from the car park on the A712, and the reward is a wide view over the forest and the Grey Mare’s Tail waterfall nearby.
