Ruthwell Church
Local highlightRuthwell Church was rebuilt to shelter the Ruthwell Cross — a tall carved standing cross, one of the great works of Anglo-Saxon Northumbria, its edges cut with runes that spell out lines of the Old English poem “The Dream of the Rood.” The cross now stands in a sunken apse inside the church. Access is arranged through the parish, so ask locally before you make the trip; it’s off the Solway coast road east of Annan.
