A Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust reserve out on the Solway merse, famous for the wintering birds that pour in off the estuary. Come between autumn and early spring and you can watch thousands of barnacle geese and whooper swans from the hides and towers, at their best around the daily feeds. Open to visitors with an admission charge; winter is the season to catch the big flocks. Dumfries station is about 12km away.
