Annan is a red-sandstone market town set just back from where the River Annan meets the Solway, and it made its living from that firth for centuries — from salmon nets and shipyards to trade across to the Cumbrian coast. The broad main street and old town hall are worth a wander. Handy for arriving: the station sits right in town, on the line between Dumfries and Carlisle.
