A museum near Gretna telling the story of HM Factory Gretna, the vast First World War works that turned out cordite for the shells at the front. Tens of thousands worked here, many of them women, mixing the volatile paste nicknamed the “devil’s porridge”. Open to visitors with an admission charge, it’s a genuinely eye-opening slice of wartime history. Annan station is about 6km west.
