New Galloway claims to be Scotland’s smallest royal burgh — in truth barely more than one long street of a town in the Glenkens, above Loch Ken. It makes a handy base for the loch and the Galloway hills, with Kells kirk and its famous carved gravestones just to the north. Cyclists know it for the nearby Raiders’ Road forest drive.
