Laid out in 1792 by the merchant William Douglas, Castle Douglas is a planned Georgian town beside Carlingwark Loch, its wide main street built for markets. These days it trades on food — officially designated Scotland’s Food Town, with dozens of independent food shops and cafes. The loch on the town’s edge is good for a stroll, and Threave Garden lies just to the west.
