Threave Garden near Castle Douglas is run by the National Trust for Scotland and has long doubled as its school of gardening, so it’s beautifully kept: 64 acres of themed garden rooms around a Victorian mansion, with walled beds, a rock garden and a spring daffodil display it’s famous for. Open most of the year with an admission charge. The wider estate takes in a nature reserve and the ruined island fortress of Threave Castle nearby.
