Kirkcudbright (say it “kir-COO-bree”) is the most handsome of the Solway towns, a colour-washed harbour on the River Dee that’s drawn painters since the 1880s — the Glasgow Boys among them. It still runs as an artists’ town, full of galleries and studios, with MacLellan’s Castle in the middle and Broughton House, the painter E.A. Hornel’s home, open to visit. A gorgeous place to browse and potter.
