Langholm, the “Muckle Toon” of Eskdale, was a wool and weaving town and the birthplace of the poet Hugh MacDiarmid, whose memorial sculpture stands on a hill above it. Neil Armstrong, tracing his Armstrong roots, was made the town’s first freeman in 1972 and called it his home town. The Common Riding here, on the last Friday of July, is one of the biggest in the Border country.
