East Dartmoor is a Site of Special Scientific Interest in Devon, covering 21 km². It is one of 191 SSSIs in the county. It is among the largest in the county. The surrounding countryside is part of Dartmoor National Park.

For arrivals by rail, Okehampton Station is about 13 km to the north-west. For more of the same, North Dartmoor and Blackslade Mire are close by.
