Local legend says Bowerman was a huntsman turned to stone by a coven of witches he had disturbed. What remains is this weathered granite pillar on Hayne Down, a stack of balanced slabs that really does resemble a face in profile. It stands on open moor above Manaton, a short walk uphill from the lane, with Hound Tor an easy add-on nearby.
