The church clock at Buckland-in-the-Moor has the words ‘MY DEAR MOTHER’ in place of numerals, set there in the 1930s by the lord of the manor in memory of his mother. The same man had the Ten Commandments carved into granite slabs up on Buckland Beacon above the village. Below, it’s a much-photographed huddle of thatched granite cottages in eastern Dartmoor, a couple of miles from Widecombe-in-the-Moor.
