Chagford was made one of Devon’s four stannary towns in 1305, where tin dug from the moor was weighed and taxed. Today the granite square and its lanes hold an outsized run of independent shops, galleries and cafes for a place this small, on the north-east edge of Dartmoor. Drewsteignton and the Teign Gorge are close by, and the lonely Warren House Inn lies out on the moor road.
