The last castle built in England stands on a granite spur above the Teign Gorge. Edwin Lutyens designed it for Julius Drewe, founder of the Home and Colonial Stores, and it went up between 1911 and 1930 — bare granite, part medieval fantasy, part modern country house. The formal terraced gardens sit apart from the castle, and paths drop from the estate down into the gorge. National Trust; paid entry.
