A sweep of dunes, saltmarsh and sandy beach at the mouth of the Wash, a nature reserve busy with birds just south of Skegness
Where the Lincolnshire coast meets the Wash, the land at Gibraltar Point breaks up into dunes, salt marsh and wide sand flats, with freshwater pools behind. It’s a national nature reserve, a protected wildlife site, looked after by the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust, and the real draw is the birds: waders and wildfowl in their thousands out on the mudflats through autumn and winter, and a bird observatory that rings migrants as they pass. Only a few miles from the amusements of Skegness, it feels a world away, quiet and flat and open to the sky. The King Charles III England Coast Path runs along the shore here.
