Spilsby is a small market town on the south-eastern edge of the Wolds, best known as the birthplace of the Arctic explorer Sir John Franklin, born here in 1786. His bronze statue stands on the market square, looking out over the spot where markets have been held since the Middle Ages. The Tennyson country around Somersby and the castle ruins at Old Bolingbroke are both a short drive north.
