Tennyson knew this corner at the foot of the Wolds — he grew up at Somersby nearby — and it’s Gunby he is said to have meant by “a haunt of ancient peace”. The red-brick William-and-Mary house was built in 1700 for Sir William Massingberd and handed to the National Trust in 1944. Behind it lie walled kitchen gardens, old roses and herbaceous borders. The village pub, the Massingberd Arms, still carries the family name.
