George and Susannah Bateman started brewing at Wainfleet in 1874, in a yard beside the River Steeping still marked by its windmill tower. Five generations on, the family firm is independent and turns out the same “Good Honest Ales” it always has. The windmill now holds the visitor centre, and brewery tours take you round the plant before a tasting. Wainfleet station sits right next door, a couple of hundred metres off.
