An old ball-clay pit that flooded once the digging stopped, the Blue Pool sits in heathland a few miles south of Wareham. The colour is the draw — very fine clay left suspended in the water scatters the light, so the pool can look milky turquoise one hour and deep green the next, changing with the sky. It’s a private attraction with a path round the water and through the surrounding pines and heather. The wider Purbeck Heaths around it are a protected wildlife site (an SSSI), part of the great sweep of heathland across Purbeck. Corfe Castle is a short drive southeast if you want to make more of the day.
