Tucked into a hidden coastal valley on the Isle of Purbeck, Encombe House is a Georgian mansion built in 1735, with grounds recently replanted by the designer Tom Stuart-Smith. The house itself stays firmly private, and most of the 2,000-acre estate is off-limits, but the gardens open on a handful of days a year for the National Garden Scheme, with the dramatic setting the main draw. Corfe Castle station is about 4km to the north.
